A good night’s sleep should not come with a running soundtrack every time you turn over. An ottoman bed squeaking is usually caused by movement between parts of the frame, slats, floor or lift mechanism - and in many cases, it can be solved with a few careful checks.
Because ottoman beds combine a supportive bed frame with valuable hidden storage, there are more moving components than on a standard divan. That does not mean a squeak signals poor quality or that you need a replacement straight away. It does mean identifying the source before tightening, adjusting or lubricating anything.
Why is your ottoman bed squeaking?
The first job is to work out when the noise happens. If it squeaks only as you lift the mattress platform, the hinges, gas struts or connecting brackets are the likely cause. If it happens when you roll over in bed, look first at the slats, centre support, joints or mattress. A creak that appears only when you get in or out of bed may be caused by uneven flooring or feet that are not sitting flat.
Most noises come from friction. Wood can move slightly against wood, metal fittings can shift against the frame, and a loose bolt can create a small amount of play that becomes noticeable under body weight. Temperature and humidity can also affect timber frames, particularly in centrally heated bedrooms where the air changes through the seasons.
Loose fittings and frame joints
Over time, everyday use can loosen bolts, screws and corner brackets. Even a fitting that looks secure may need a small turn with the correct tool. Check the side rails, headboard and footboard connections, centre support beam and any brackets joining the lifting base to the frame.
Tighten fittings gradually rather than forcing them. Overtightening can damage threaded inserts, strip screw holes or place unnecessary pressure on timber. If a screw repeatedly loosens, the hole may be worn and need professional attention rather than another turn of the screwdriver.
Slats moving in their holders
Sprung or solid slats can squeak where they rest in plastic caps or touch the frame. This is especially common if a mattress is regularly moved, the bed has been relocated, or the slats have shifted slightly over time.
Remove the mattress where practical and press each slat gently. Listen for the noise, then inspect whether the slat is sitting squarely in its holder. A cracked cap, bowed slat or missing support should be replaced rather than ignored, as these parts contribute to the bed’s comfort and weight distribution.
The ottoman lift mechanism
The lift mechanism does a lot of work. Gas struts support the weight of the mattress and base while the hinges guide the opening motion, so a small squeak during lifting is not unusual. However, loud grinding, a sudden jolt, resistance or a base that will not stay open are signs to stop using the mechanism until it has been checked.
Do not remove or adjust gas struts while they are under tension. They are powerful components and should be handled in line with the bed’s assembly instructions. If lubricant is suitable for your particular mechanism, use only a light application on the pivot points recommended by the manufacturer. A silicone or PTFE-based lubricant is generally cleaner than household oil, which can attract dust and stain upholstery or flooring.
Uneven floors and bed feet
Many UK homes have floors that are not perfectly level, especially in older houses, upstairs bedrooms and rented properties. If the bed rocks slightly, the movement can make joints creak even when every fitting is tight.
Test this by pressing down gently on each corner of the frame with the mattress in place. If one corner lifts or shifts, reposition the bed if possible and check that all feet are fitted correctly. Furniture pads can reduce minor movement and help protect hard flooring, but they should be even in thickness so the frame remains properly supported.
How to find the exact source of the squeak
A quick, methodical check is more effective than tightening every bolt at random. Clear the storage area first, as loose boxes or items touching the underside of the platform can make a surprising amount of noise.
With another adult nearby if possible, test the bed in stages. Press gently on the headboard, side rails, footboard and centre of the base. Then sit on each side, lie down and shift your weight slowly. Finally, open and close the ottoman mechanism without forcing it. This narrows the issue down and helps you avoid treating the wrong part.
If you can safely do so, remove the mattress and repeat the pressure test. A mattress can sometimes be the source of a creak, particularly if its springs are worn or if it rubs against a prominent edge of the frame. A mattress that is too large for the bed can also create friction when the ottoman platform moves.
Easy fixes for a squeaky ottoman bed
Once you have located the sound, work through the simplest solution first. For most household checks, all you need is the tool supplied with the bed or an appropriate Allen key, a screwdriver, a clean cloth and, where approved, a suitable lubricant.
Start by tightening accessible bolts and screws across the frame. Work from one end to the other and check each connection twice, as adjusting one joint can alter the pressure on another. Wipe away dust from hinge areas, slat holders and frame edges while you are there.
For slats that rub in their holders, make sure each one is correctly seated. If the slat ends are in good condition but still create a light creak, thin felt pads can reduce wood-on-wood contact in suitable fixed areas. Do not add thick padding that changes the slat position or prevents it from sitting securely in its cap.
For squeaks at a hinge pivot, use the manufacturer-approved lubricant sparingly and operate the bed several times to distribute it. Keep lubricant away from fabric upholstery, the mattress and gas strut shafts. Wipe off excess immediately.
If flooring is the issue, repositioning the frame by a few centimetres may help. Check that the storage base is not overfilled either. Ottoman storage is ideal for spare bedding, seasonal clothing and lighter household essentials, but heavy items piled unevenly can put extra strain on the opening base and make movement less smooth.
When a squeak needs more than a simple adjustment
A light creak is one thing. Visible damage, instability or difficulty opening the bed deserves a closer look. Stop using the ottoman lift function and seek advice if you notice bent metalwork, split timber, cracked slats, loose mounting points, leaking gas struts or a platform that drops unexpectedly.
It also pays to check the assembly instructions before making changes. Ottoman beds vary between side-lift and end-lift designs, and the positioning of brackets, supports and struts is specific to each model. Swapping fittings between sides or using non-matching replacement parts can affect how the mechanism performs.
If the bed is newly assembled, recheck all fixings after the first few weeks of normal use. Components can settle as the frame takes weight, and a brief maintenance check can prevent minor movement becoming a persistent nighttime creak.
Keep your ottoman bed quiet for longer
A little regular care keeps both the storage function and sleeping surface working as they should. Avoid dragging the frame across the floor, lift the platform smoothly rather than pulling it sideways, and keep the storage compartment organised so nothing catches underneath. When rotating or replacing your mattress, use the opportunity to inspect the slats and fittings.
An ottoman bed should make a bedroom feel calmer, more spacious and easier to organise - not interrupt your rest. Once the source is found and corrected, you can get back to the real benefit: a stylish, practical bed with the storage your home needs and the quiet comfort your evenings deserve.
